PE

MAS PE offers an inclusive and ambitious curriculum. This is guided by the question “What would a MAS PE student look like at the end of their school journey?”  We want students to participate in PE, enjoy it, have and take opportunities within PE and sport, be proud of themselves and their performance, foster a lifelong learning of the importance of PE & be engaged with it throughout their lives.

To implement our intention of PEOPLE, we have created a curriculum and PE offer at MAS that allows each student to achieve success for them.

Core PE lessons at KS3 will be driven by ‘Big Questions’.  All lessons will have a learning focus that supports students in reaching an answer to the ‘Big Question’. Questions develop as they go from year 7 to year 9.

The Curriculum is split into 5 key areas, with ‘Big Questions’ from these 5 areas shaping the curriculum map.

  • Knowledgeable
  • Team
  • Competitive
  • Creative
  • Healthy

A wide variety of sports will be used as the vehicles for learning within lessons.

A typical curriculum block will include 7 or 8 lessons, each with a learning outcome. These 7 or 8 lessons will be split into three areas.

  • 1. Motor competence lessons at the start (including skills, tactics and rules)
  • 2. Concept lessons in the middle
  • 3. Assessment lessons at the end

Students at KS4 will select a MAS PE Pathway which will have a predetermined curriculum map adjusted to the pathway.

  • Healthy Pathway
  • Competitive Pathway
  • Team Pathway

KS4 students will continue their journey from KS3 with KS4 ‘Big Topics’. These will be matched to the pathway chosen.

  • Healthy - Self-care & personal development
  • Competitive - Self-improvement & performance
  • Team - Teamwork & Inclusion

KS5 students have an hour of core PE a week and use the time to continue their positive relationship with physical activity and sport. A variety of opportunities are offered each week including opportunities for work, leadership development and competitive sport.

Assessment in PE

Students are assessed at KS3 at the end of each small block of the curriculum with an assessment lesson. This will aim for the students to display their learnings and the staff to assess current progress.

Students are assessed in three key areas;

  • Motor Competence
  • Curriculum knowledge
  • School Values

Staff and students use descriptors to understand at what stage a learner is at. These offer some insight into current success but also show students what they are aiming for. At reporting points, an overview of all students' assessment points is given to them and parents and this allows PE staff to give more worthwhile actions for improvement. This may be a motor competence action or a concept action linked to the block of lessons such as ‘Creative lessons’.
